A History of Ma Fischer’s Restaurant
Just like any great story, it started with ambition, a dream, and quest for something more. George Panos, emigrated to Canada in 1960, with only $100 to his name. For years he worked as a waiter and a butcher while wondering what was next. Upon meeting his wife Sofia in 1968, his journey truly began. Life brought him to Milwaukee, more specifically, 2214 N. Farwell Ave., where since 1947, Fischer’s Sandwich Shop stop. In 1975, Jackie “Ma” Fischer sold the restaurant to George, and he quickly moved in his family upstairs to help run the newly named, Ma Fischer’s Restaurant.
The Panos family lived and breathed Ma Fischer’s Restaurant, as George cooked, Sofia ran the register, while Joe, Patty, and Peter helped out wherever needed. It has always been about family at Ma Fischer’s Restaurant, and this continues today! This family-focused approach to the restaurant has garnered great success, as Ma Fischer’s Restaurant is known as a Milwaukee dining staple. As a testament to its popularity, the diner has undergone 4 expansion renovations in the last 30 years! The East side restaurant currently features 18 tables, 11 booths, and a counter.
Ma Fischer’s menu has maintained its simplicity over the years, while pleasing all palettes with delectable American fare and other flavorful dishes. All are welcome at Ma Fischer’s Restaurant, the variety of the crowd inside the restaurant is as diverse as the items found on the menu. All walks of life have sat down and enjoyed a meal at Ma’s, form businessmen to construction workers, teachers, students, professional athletes and more have all come through the door. The Panos family looks forward to serving Milwaukeeans for years to come, and appreciates your patronage.
